Welcome to Eastside Calisthenics College, Geelong.
Eastside Calisthenics College Geelong, was opened 26 years ago by principal coach Teresa Osbourne. We are a small club with approx 70 girls competing in 2011. We train at St.Albans Park and Leopold, Geelong. We are a 'not for profit' club which keeps your costs to a minimum. We do take part in fundraising activities, and in the past three years have held very successful Music Trivia evenings which were enjoyed by all. We have a strong community of willing helpers, being our families, who have contributed in many ways over the years with costumes, promotions, props, fundraising, and sewing to name a few.
In 2010 we embarked on a new venture by entering a Masters team (age 26+) in competitions. We have numerous parents who have sat through several years of watching their daughters develop amazing skills with their rods and clubs, and it was time for our mums to "have a go." Beginners are welcome in this age group.
Finally, we would like to extend a warm welcome to any new members of our club, and any prospective members in the Geelong area looking to take up calisthenics. A free trial class is available to anyone interested in giving calisthenics a try.
What is Calisthenics?
Calisthenics comes from the greek word "kallos" for beauty and "thenos" for strength. It is a uniquely Australian sport which combines various elements of dance, gymnastics, singing, acting, flexibility and skills with apparatus, which are all combined to create a choreographed routine to music.
Calisthenics is a competitive team sport. Teams compete in various sections at competition level depending on their age group. Tinies only compete in 4 sections and 2 competitions during the year whereas all other teams compete in 6/7 sections and 4 or 5 competitions.
Competitive sections are:
Figure March
Exercise/Freearm
Clubs
Rods
Aesthetics
Folk/Character Dance
Song and Dance
Calisthenics Revue
